CITL (Conseil intermunicipal de transport Laurentides) and the city of Saint-Jerôme have announced a new transportation service for seniors. As a result, Saint-Jerôme becomes the seventh city on the CITL territory to offer this service.
Every Friday, between the hours of 6:30 a.m. and 10:30 p.m., Saint-Jérôme residents 65 and over who are not admissible to the Transport Adapté program may be picked up from their home and brought to one of several selected locations (listed below) for the cost of $1 per ride ($2 for a return trip). This announcement is part of Saint-Jerôme’s redesigned collective transportation program launched on August 10, 2014.
The objective of the new senior transportation program is to allow people who are 65 and over (and do not qualify for Transport Adapté) to travel comfortably by taxi from their home to a determined location within their town. These locations include the hospital, medical clinics, local businesses and community centers.
“Saint-Jérôme is eager to be recognized as a senior friendly city. We recognize the rights of seniors to live in the best possible conditions” says Stéphane Maher, the mayor of Saint-Jerôme and a member of CITL. “Saint-Jerôme goes beyond tributes and big declarations by making concrete efforts to adapt its policies, structures and services to meet the needs of seniors in respect to housing, leisure, urban layouts and transportation” added Mr. Maher.
Senior citizens who are interested in taking advantage of this service must register with the city of Saint-Jérôme by phoning the following number: (450) 436-1511, extension 3273. They may also register in person at Quartier 50+ located at 425, Jean Baptiste Roland Boulevard.
Once registered, the next step is to reserve their transportation by phoning CIT Laurentides’ Transport Adapté department the Wednesday before the Friday on which they wish to travel. On that Friday, the taxi will show up at their residence at a pre-arranged time. The payment is made directly to the taxi driver after boarding.
