BALCON VERT-GARDENING/SOCIAL PROJECT (2025-07-30)
Three years ago, a grant from ?Les Oeuvres du Cardinal L?ger, foundation Jules et Paul-Emile L?ger? allowed 4 Korners to initiate a gardening project within the community. The objective of this project was two-fold: A method to provide seniors living in apartments and low income families with a means to have fresh produce; and engage seniors living alone, or with very little social networks the opportunity engage in an activity circled around social interaction.
A total of 30 containers (made from recycled materials) were distributed to families and seniors, volunteers prepared the bins with earth, and showed everyone how to plant summer vegetables in their specially constructed containers.
As a direct result of this project, the participants got out of isolation, through interaction with other participants, and project coordinators. Another spin off was a sense of empowerment gained through knowledge sharing as each participant was eager to demonstrate with their co-participants, different methods and skills that they acquired over the course of the summer whereby the were helping themselves, in gaining access to a better quality and quantity of food. Recipes were shared by the participants at the end of the project. This program aids the health and vitality of the community at large and with the input of community partners, will continue to grow.
